Small-sided Referee Clinic

  • Minimum Age:    12 years old
  • Clinic Length:    6 hours
  • Clinic Fee:    $40.00* (plus $4.25 processing fee)

This six hour clinic teaches the basics of refereeing and certifies people to referee small-sided games involving players U6 to U12 (for the uninitiated, ‘U6’ means ‘Under 6 years old’). Those interested in taking this clinic must be at least 12 years old on the date the clinic is offered. In years where there is enough interest, a second clinic is offered mid-September.

Entry-level Referee Clinic

  • Minimum age:    14 years old
  • Clinic length:    17 hours
  • Clinic fee:    $125.00* (plus $4.25 processing fee)

*With the goal of maintaining a strong pool of referees, HCFC will pay the clinic fee for those who intend to officiate for the club in the coming season; please contact the club office to obtain a fee waiver code to use when registering.

This three day clinic goes into much greater detail regarding the laws and mechanics of refereeing than the small-sided clinic and certifies people to act as referee or assistant referee on full-field, 11-a-side soccer matches. The clinic is taught by experienced referee instructors who use video educational material and practical on-field sessions. The topics covered include the Laws of the Game, Positioning, Signals, Game Management, Pre-match Preparation, and Match Reporting. Those interested in participating in this clinic must be at least 14 years old on the date the clinic is offered.
Upon completion of the Entry-level Referee Clinic, referees 14 or 15 years old receive Youth Referee certification while referees 16 years old or older receive District Referee certification. There is no difference between these two certifications other than the age of the person certified. Once a Youth Referee turns 16, they automatically become a District Referee with no further upgrading for this change to occur.

As a general guideline Youth Referees will officiate as lead referee on matches in which they are at least two years older than the players, and as assistant referee on matches in which they are at least the same age as the players.
