In the spring of 2008, Harbour City FC supported a new program for soccer players with special needs. Just for Kicks is a program dedicated to children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities that allows them to explore the sport of soccer. The goal of the clinic is to provide the opportunity for these players to learn some soccer skills, make friends and to participate in an activity with their peers.
Since its inception in 2008 Just for Kicks (JFK) has provided 17(8 week) clinics; in the spring (May-June) at Merle Logan Field from 3:30-4:30 every Friday, in the Fall (Sept-Oct) at Merle Logan Field from 3:30-4:30 every Friday, and in the Winter (Jan-Feb) at Oliver Woods Community Centre from 3:30-4:30 every Friday.
Approximately 75 players with special needs have participated, some in every clinic that we’ve had, some occasionally, some only once. Average attendance in each clinic is 24, according to our HCFC registration we only take a maximum of 25, but we have never refused anyone. The players range in age from 5 to 23, and the range of disabilities is enormous, Down Syndrome, brain injuries, cerebral palsy, intellectual, motor skills, low to high functioning autism etc. We have had at least two of our players with autism transition back into club soccer successfully.
