Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Soccer Season?
Our main soccer season runs from September until March.
How do I register?
All of our registration is online and can be accessed from our homepage. Just click on the "Register Now" button in the top right corner.
What is the youngest age of enrollment?
Our Little Kickers program caters for U4s and U5s and is a really fun introduction to soccer. It is a 40 minute 8 week program which uses a station based format to keep the young soccer players engaged, moving and having lots of fun.
Can I request for my child to play with their friends?
Team creation is a very time consuming process, and team sport is a great opportunity for children to make new friends and meet others in their community. For our younger age groups (U6 through U10), we try to create teams with children from the same school catchment, however, this is not always possible. If there is an extenuating reason why your child should be placed on a team with another child please write a note in the Additional Player Notes box at the bottom of the waiver. Special requests will only be considered up to June 30, and granting of such requests cannot be guaranteed.
Will my child play on the same team with the same coach and players each year?
Not necessarily. Volunteer coaches are not always available year to year and the experience demographic of returning players vs. new players sometimes requires us to adjust teams to create fair, balanced teams. Different age groups have different squad size requirements. A significant shift is from U10 double sided to U11 that is single 8 aside and beginning in U12 some children are selected to play on Tier 3 teams so there is a significant shift in team composition from U10-U11-U12. Children benefit from having different instruction and varying coaches through a soccer ‘career’ which is helpful for a child’s soccer development.
How are teams formed?
House teams are formed with the primary goal to create balanced teams while still respecting catchment area and friendships. Coach availability on occasion may result in changes to team allocations.
Does registration fill up?
The registration deadline of June 30 is so that we have an ample amount of time to create teams to accommodate all players. Players who do not meet the deadline of June 30th could potentially be waitlisted until a team can be found for them. Waitlisted players will be placed in the order of registration. The club works very hard to find and build teams to place all players. Our goal is that every child has a place to play soccer.
Can my child play in a different age group?
Per BC Soccer regulations, all players must play in their respective age group. The only exceptions to this include:
If a player has been identified as being significantly advanced in skill and maturity such that playing in a higher age group is necessary to their player development.
If a player has an identified physical or mental disability and is best placed in a different age group
The Club’s Technical Lead will need to approve any player not playing within their proper age group.
What happens if my child misses practice?
Practices are very important to developing the skills of a player and building a team bond – more so than games. If your child cannot make practice due to illness or a conflict, please advise the coach right away. If your child is missing practices regularly, please discuss with your coach or the Club as it is important for your child to attend as many practices as possible. This gets more important in the higher age levels and as play becomes more competitive – training is important to the team as a whole and if a player is not developing with the team that is not fair to the rest of the team.
When do we find out the practice and game day, time and location?
We do our best to advise of practice days and times as early as possible. The city does not release what facilities we have available for the season until August. Only once we know our facilities can the work of schedules begin. Many of our age groups also interlock with the neighboring clubs and we rely on them to provide us with information so that schedules can be completed.
What other training opportunities are available for my child?
HCFC offers an Academy through the fall Sept-Nov, winter Jan-Mar and spring Apr-June - all players are encouraged to participate. The Academy is offered on Mondays. Information on the Academy program is available on the website.
When does Rep soccer start?
Rep soccer starts at Under 12. Players who feel they are at the required standard for rep but are younger than U12 can come to tryouts for evaluation.
When are Rep tryouts?
Rep Tryouts take place in April and May.
What/When is Spring Soccer?
Spring Soccer is a fun 10 week program for players of all abilities to come and play the game in its purest form. The format is based around small sided game's (3v3/4v4/5v5 etc).
Small sided games have been credited in developing technically skilled players across the world and they are used at all levels of the game. SSG's allow players to learn the game by playing the game and also give each player many more touches on the ball than they would normally get in larger sided games.
HCFC Spring Soccer runs for 10 weeks from early April until mid June
What is the Academy?
The Academy is made up of development sessions which help players to improve their game under the coaching of HCFC Technical Lead Daragh Fitzgerald, as well as a number of other BC Soccer certified coaches. The Academy is available for everyone and takes place on Monday evenings.
What is the 4 Corner Model?
Our club philosophy for developing players is based on the 4 Corner Model. This model looks to develop players in 4 key areas. Technical/Tactical, Physical, Psychological and Social. This model aims not only to create good soccer players but well rounded individuals also.
